Hecate - Box 41

I named this box after the anciet Greek goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night and crossroads: Hecate.

Hecate is often depicted as a triple-formed figure. She rules over boundaries, the moon, and the underworld, holding deep connections to both light and darkness.

The most famous anecdote about Hecate involves her role as a compassionate guide during the abduction of Persephone.

When Hades seized Persephone and dragged her to the Underworld, her mother, Demeter, searched the earth in absolute despair. While other gods ignored Demeter's grief, Hecate sat in her cave and listened closely. She was the only divinity who heard the distant, echoing cries of the young goddess.

On the tenth day of the search, Hecate flew to Demeter’s side, holding a blazing torch in each hand to pierce the darkness. She comforted the grieving mother and used her unique sight to guide Demeter directly to Helios, the sun god, who finally revealed where Persephone was hidden. Because of her kindness and guidance, Hecate became Persephone’s permanent companion and guide, moving safely between the realms of the living and the dead.

Nikita Gill wrote a wonderfully intimate book reimagining this myth: Hekate - The Witch. I recommend listening to the audiobook while reading - as Ms. Gill's voice is simply mesmerizing and magical.

Box gifted to Molly.
